The Colour tones of Bronze Classic or Coloured Swallows by Sculptress JOEL

Classic Bronze and Contemporary Colour

Choosing the Classic or the Colour

Classic Bronze Patination.

What makes the bronze your choice? Do you prefer the classic rich dark tones of classic bronze patina? Though perhaps with some warmth and highlights. Or are you excited by the rich contemporary bright colour tones that are possible by adding extra time, materials and techniques?

I have been exploring these options and choices and here a selection of examples from the years of exhibiting and commissions.

Classic Bronze

For many this is how bronze should look. And some find the addition of other patination colours, except perhaps a trace of white or a different tone to the base is the only acceptable option…. Then these are for you!

For Some the Only Choice of Classic Bronze

Bronze Contemporary Bright Colour Options

Now for the bright contemporary look of bronzes that have multiple layers and applications to enrich the colour tones.

I was awarded the Lamport Hall Preservation bursary in 2024 and this enabled me to explore and fund the skilled application of colour by G W Lunt’s specialist. Thus we achieved softer contemporary tones – seen below

These layered colours should be well protected with wax and are ideal for interior design features and special gifts to be enjoyed indoors.

I have also explored the vibrant look of combining these colour patinated bronzes with resin and wood for more interior design elements. This is especially appropriate for the Ruby Throated Hummingbird with its dramatic contrast of bright red throat and green wings.

The contemporary use of resin and gorgeous woods like Oak – give a sense of light and the look of water

I will use the Hummingbird to show you the contrasts and preferences of well applied colour. Follow from pre-patination, the bird itself, classic bronze pair and the use of colour and ruby silver leaf…

You can see why, though I have the classic options, I do love a bit of iconic colour … So here is the Ruby throated Hummingbird with birthday Red Roses

So please do call for a chat and whether you prefer the enduring appearance of simple bronze, or are looking for a pop of colour – I do love exploring and achieving both.
