Honouring a Life Through Sculpture – The Purple Martin Moon
When a client approached Sculptress JOEL with the vision of commemorating a beloved father’s life, the result was a heartfelt and striking tribute set within a peaceful memorial garden. The brief was clear: a pair of Purple Martins, cast in bronze, to represent freedom, memory, and beauty.
Having previously admired JOEL’s bronze sculptures of Swallows and Martins, the client was eager to be part of the creative journey. JOEL embraced this collaborative approach, taking great care to capture the distinct head shape and essence of the Purple Martin with zoological precision and artistic sensitivity.
Once the wax birds and moon were ready, the sculpture was cast in bronze at the foundry. JOEL personally oversaw key stages of the process—returning to supervise the casting quality, carefully arranging the two birds in a graceful meeting over a crescent moon, and guiding the detailed patination to achieve the delicate, iridescent tones unique to the Purple Martin.
The finished sculpture arrived safely at its new home and was received with deep emotion and gratitude. It now stands as a permanent celebration of a cherished life—bringing comfort, reflection, and quiet beauty to the garden it inhabits.
