Wide-eyed Wonder – the Roe Deer Fawn

Discovering more about different species in order to achieve an accurate likeness is always such a wonderful journey of discovery.

Many of us have fond memories of the story of Bambi and his wide eyed view on the forest and his woodland friends. Although the famous movie set the young fawn as a White tailed deer of the US the original book was written about a European Roe deer, Capreolus capreolus.

The male of this species is called a buck and the female a doe. The young born in May/June may also be called kids. They are often found in woodland, or farmland on woodland margins, as well as areas of mixed grassland and heather.

Studying skeletal references and musculature helps the sculpture process and especially the design of the armature that supports the clay.

Once cast in bronze the iconic colours can be achieved with the use of special patination techniques. This helps us make the characteristic spotted coat and detailed markings round the nose and ears.

Help Increase the range of Sculptures of British Mammals

I would love to make more detailed portrait sculptures of British and European mammals.

Please let me know if there is another mammal species you would like to commission.

Let’s have a conversation about your ideas.

Classic Bronze

Some prefer the classic bronze appearance for sculptures ad statues and the Roe deer fawns are available in this in traditional and classic bronze patina. To date there are three different sculptures to choose from, two are limited in edition number and the latest is a numbered edition sculpture of the young Roe lying down with legs more tightly folded.

Did you know that when they are first born they lie together, but soon are separated to rest singly for their safety?

We have had a great time placing the group of Roe deer sculptures in different positions for the National exhibitions and in different garden and landscape settings.
